Exposure to light and child development

Your child is begging you to redecorate their room or you're preparing your newborn's bedroom. After a few days, the work is coming to an end: the painting is done, the bed is set up and the decorative elements are placed.

However, you still have no idea how you're going to light up the room.

This article will give you the keys to optimize your child's visual acuity for their well-being and development.

Lighting: a subject that is not talked about enough

If you've read other articles written on the site, you've probably realized that our exposure to light plays a major role in our health, mood, and sleep.

Lighting is unfortunately a subject too often left to chance and absolutely not inscribed as important in people's minds because of a lack of information.

In a child's room, high-quality lighting plays a key role.

As in adults, poor exposure to light can have a direct impact on a child's physical and psychological well-being but also on their development. It is therefore essential to choose the right lighting for your space.

Here are three tips to help you create a bright environment that is conducive to your child's development.

No. 1: Avoid direct light sources

You've probably already noticed that your child feels more discomfort when light intensity is too high. This is because children are generally more sensitive to light than adults.

According to the Jules-Gonin Ophthalmological Hospital, their crystalline lens is completely transparent at birth and gradually becomes opaque as they grow. During its first few months, a newborn baby only opens its eyes wide in the dark because it has a very low tolerance to light rays.

Let's take the example of a child's lens in the face of UV rays:

· From 0 to 1 year old, the lens filters only 10% of UV rays.

· From 1 to 12 years of age, only 40% of UV rays are filtered

· From the age of 12, the lens gradually becomes cloudy and begins to filter UV rays properly .

So it's essential to avoid direct light sources that could dazzle or tire him.

Here are three examples of light sources that can be a source of discomfort for your child's eyes:

· Bare light bulbs

· Recessed spotlights

· Bedside lamps with a visible light source

Instead, opt for lampshades, floor lamps, or light fixtures that diffuse light softly and evenly.

No. 2: Choose the right color temperature

The temperature of a color, expressed in degrees Kelvin (K), is used to define the general hue of the light, which varies from yellow to blue to white.

To better understand, imagine going from the color of a candle (2000 K), to the white light of the midday sun (between 4000 and 5000 K), to end with the cold light emission of a darkened sky (between 6200 and 8000 K), like the circadian cycle.

If you want more information, we recommend this article: Which light color to choose for my space?

These different color temperatures can have an impact on your child's mood and sleep.

· Warm lights, from 2700 to 3000K, are soothing and relaxing, perfect for relaxation areas such as bedrooms or play areas.

· Cool lights around 4000K and above are ideal for work or study spaces. In fact, some Dutch studies have shown that lighting positively affects students' concentration and attention.

It is important to find the right balance according to the use of the room and the sensitivities of each individual.

No. 3: Install a dimmer switch

A dimmer switch can be installed instead of a regular switch and allows you to adjust the light intensity in a room according to your needs and those of your child.

For quiet activity, to play or to comfort them at night, a dimmable bulb or dimmer is an expensive but wise investment for parents who want to offer adaptable and comfortable lighting for their child.
