Light intensity is the key to transforming your home into a space where you feel good. Optimal lighting is not only a question of style, but of visual comfort and well-being. Too much light, and you feel like you're in the spotlight; not enough, and everything becomes dark and dreary. The trick? Find the right intensity for each room, and adapt the lighting according to the time of day. Want to know how to have perfect light intensity in every space of your home? We'll explain everything.
What intensity for which room?
Not all rooms are created equal, and each requires its own little adjustment. Here's how to adjust the intensity room by room:
• Living room : The living room is the heart of the home. Do you spend time there with friends or watching series? Opt for moderate light during the day, between 300 and 500 lumens. For Netflix evenings, lower it to 200 lumens for a relaxing effect. Too much light here, and relaxation is out the window.
• Kitchen : This is serious business. Between chopping vegetables and reading recipes, you need good light: aim for 500 to 700 lumens. But once the food is ready and guests are seated, soften to 300 lumens to create a more convivial atmosphere. Who wants to dine under spotlights?
• Office : If you really want to be productive, there’s no half measure: 700 lumens or more to avoid eye strain. The goal is to see clearly and stay focused. But if you’re hanging around late, don’t hesitate to turn it down a bit, so you don’t end up blinded by your own ideas.
• Bedroom : Here, it all depends on the time. In the morning, aim for a soft but sufficient light (200 to 300 lumens) for a pleasant awakening, without visual aggression. In the evening, that's when we dim everything: 100 to 200 lumens max. We're not in a football stadium, you need peace and quiet to sleep, not a light show.
Why change the intensity according to the time?
The intensity of the light should change depending on your day so as not to disrupt your internal clock. In the morning, a brighter light activates your energy (thank you cortisol), and at the end of the day, a soft light prepares your body for sleep (hello, melatonin). Basically, light is your ally if you know how to use it correctly. Too much light in the evening, and hello sleepless nights.
